Holiday Parade of Space Marines

In celebration of a the holiday season, a new codex and a raft of new models for the iconic Warhammer 40K army, Gunslinger Games announces 'The Holiday Parade of Space Marines!'

Interested hobbyists are encouraged to participate by submitting a Tactical Space Marine model from their chosen chapter, whether of GW creation--Ultramarine, Black Templar, Blood or Dark Angel, Space Wolf, etc--or the player's own--a 'DIY' or 'Do it Yourself' chapter. Gunslinger will devote space in their display case to these power-armored representatives of the thousand chapters of the Adeptus Astartes through November and December, with opportunity for hobbyists to vote for their favorite. Anyone may submit one of their Space Marines, and anyone may vote in the Parade--no purchase necessary!

Chapters are more than just the fighting strength of their individual warriors, however--and to reflect that, additional contests will run concurrently for Space Marine Leaders and Space Marine Vehicles. Hobbyists interested in submitting models for these two supplemental contests can do so by *making the relevant purchase* from sponsor Gunslinger Games (with plenty of time to make a special order, currently the best way to obtain GW product through Gunslinger--and at a discount off list price), completing and submitting their model of choice for display in Gunslinger's display case through the end of the year.

Further--although the Parade of Space Marines tactical entries are restricted to one per hobbyist, players may submit as many Leaders or Vehicles as they purchase from Gunslinger and complete!

In addition to prizes for Favorite Space Marine on Parade, Favorite Space Marine Leader and Favorite Space Marine Vehicle, all of which will be determined by popular vote, there will be an adjudicated prize for Best Space Marine--which will be the single best painted and converted space marine in power armour, from either the Space Marine or Leader category--and Best Chapter Representative--which can be *any* model from any of the three categories, including vehicles, which through excellence of execution best embodies the ideals of the Adeptus Astartes and it's individual chapter.

Entrants *must* register when they submit their tactical space marine model to the Parade, listing their name and the name of their represented chapter. They do this simply by posting that information to the Adeptus North Texas emailing list.

Any model which would constitute a legal 'Tactical Space Marine' or the equivalent from a related codex may be submitted, including Sergeants, special and heavy weapon carriers, but remember a stated goal of the contest--and one of the adjudicated prizes--will reward the iconic model in this category. Hobbyists who make a purchase of a Leader (defined for the purposes of this contest as any Space Marine Commander, Captain, Librarian, Chaplain, Techmarine, Apothecary, Standard Bearer or Squad Sergeant model or the equivalent from a related Space Marine chapter, such as an Iron Priest or Rune Priest, or a chapter-specific Leader such as the Black Templars' Emperors Champion) or a Vehicle (defined for this contest as any codex entry having an AV--including walkers and flyers--*or* being a Bike) will register at the Adeptus North Texas emailing list upon making the purchase, identifying themselves and what they bought, which will then be confirmed on the list when they return to submit it for display. Leader models in Terminator Armour *may* be purchased and submitted.

Entries may be submitted to Gunslinger Games for display immediately. Voting will not begin until after Christmas...but the Parade will only look good if there are models to see, so there is incentive to submitting models early: any model on display in Gunslinger's case *and* registered on the Adeptus email list during November (before 12:01am Central December 1) accrues one bonus vote for Favorite model in it's category, and any model on display in Gunslinger's case *and* registered on the Adeptus email list in December before Christmas Day (12:01am December 25) accrues one bonus vote for Favorite model in it's category. Yes, that is potentially two votes a model can earn before balloting begins! Winners will be announced, prizes awarded (and models may be collected) after January 1, 2014, following conclusion of balloting at close of business for host Gunslinger Games for 2013.

March Storm of Magic Event Series Modeling Contest: Mounted Wizards at Area 51

The North Texas Storm of Magic Modeling Event Series races to its climax with an opportunity to enter a spellcaster on a mount for Warhammer Fantasy Battle (see specifications following) at participating retailer Area 51 Grapevine. This is the final opportunity to accrue benefits such as rerolls, extra lives, extra spells and/or powerful magicks for models to use in the climactic Event Storm of Magic Megabattle at Gunslinger Games, a chance to take home great prizes in the doing--and a terrific opportunity to support a fine North Texas retailer and fill his display cabinets with sharp-looking fantasy miniatures!

March 2012: Area 51 Grapevine -- Storm of Magic Mounted Wizard Painting Contest: Participants may submit an objective-claiming spellcaster model which must be riding a mount or monster option from it's entry in the relevant army book to Area 51 in Grapevine any time from March 1 through close of business Sunday, March 25 where they will remain on display through March 31. The submitted model may be a spellcaster from the chosen army book *or* a legal ally spellcaster from another army book as described in the Storm of Magic supplement. There will be *no* entry fee at this sponsoring retailer, and no purchase is required. Entries are restricted to one per hobbyist. Entered models must be primarily Citadel miniatures, must be riding a mount (including monsters) of a type legally described as an option in the relevant army book, and must be on a standard GW base appropriate to the model's size type (though customizing/decorating the base is encouraged, the dimensions must remain play-legal). Prizes will be awarded for Best Mounted Wizard and Best Dedicated Sponsor/Event Mounted Wizard: hobbyists who present with their entered model a valid receipt showing proof of purchase for that kit at the sponsoring retailer (Area 51) after the start of the Storm of Magic Event Series November 1, 2011 qualify for this additional prize from this month's sponsor, Area 51 Grapevine!

Results: HobbytownUSA Dallas Monster Contest

Mark Pollet won his first Storm of Magic Event Series modeling contest with his entry in HobbytownUSA Dallas' February event, the Monster contest. Mark offered a powerful daemon as his entry.

Chad Jones was runner-up with that most quintessential of fantasy monsters, a red dragon.

Mark and Chad will collect their prizes from HTUD, as well as accruing benefits to their force in the climactic WHFB Storm of Magic Megabattle at Gunslinger Games.

Results: TTS Arcane Fulcrum Contest

Mary Proffitt won her second Storm of Magic Event Series modeling contest with her entry in Texas Toy Soldier's January event, the Arcane Fulcrum Terrain contest.

In fairness, it was a tie between Mary's throne of skulls terrain piece and Rick Morang's chaos vortex piece, with the terrain master himself, TTS owner Allen preferring the skulls (I liked the vortex, if it's any consolation :).

Mary will collect her prize from TTS as well as accruing benefits to her force in April's WHFB Storm of Magic Megabattle at Gunslinger Games.

Gunslinger Games 'New Model Army' Painting Contest

To celebrate the opening of their new store, at 10534 Miller Road, Gunslinger Games will host an expansive miniature painting contest--hoping to fill their new display cabinet with beautiful wargaming models of every eye-catching variety!

The 'New Model Army' Miniature Painting Contest is open to brand-new models of any sort--individual hero, cohesive unit, centerpiece vehicle or monster--with the only restrictions that the model be 'new' (see following), on a single-footprint base (meaning at least a movement or skirmish tray for units; vehicles may--but are not required to--be based, so long as unbased they still present a single footprint) and a part of a fieldable army in a wargame system (not just a decorative or ornamental model, in other words--a model that could actually appear in a tabletop wargame).

'New' in this context means a model finished in 2012. That can be a brand-new offtheshelf figure or kit, an unbuilt or unfinished model idle on a workstation for too long, even a once-complete work which has undergone a recent repaint; like GsG's new location, the submission just needs to be 'new' (and submittors are largely on the honour system here; GsG is encouraging you to build, paint and finish something new, to celebrate with them).

Models submitted may be from any miniatures wargame played at Gunslinger Games; while that certainly includes Warhammer Fantasy Battles, Warhammer 40,000, Lord of the Rings, Space Hulk, Dreadfleet, Warmachine, Hordes, SuperSystem and Bolt Action, for example, GsG will special order virtually any model for any game system, including historicals; if you have wanted to try it, they will get it--and have the space for you to use it! So approach this event as an opportunity to get that new project underway.

Gunslinger Games will award a Grand Prize of a GsG store gift certificate for the Best New Model Army Miniature entry, regardless of type. Runner-up Prizes for best models in individual categories may be awarded if there are sufficient entries--and to encourage submissions by hobbyists of all ability levels, *every entry* will be eligible for the Participation Prize, a GsG store gift certificate of *equal* value to the Grand Prize!

The 'New Model Army'
Contest will continue through Memorial Day at the end of May 2012--but one of the things GsG wants from this event is to fill their new display case with eye-catching miniatures, so interested participants can begin submitting completed entries immediately. Submitting early will accrue the submittor a real benefit: each month an entry is on display will earn it one credit toward the random Participation Prize draw at event's end--so someone who gets their model to GsG's new location before the end of January and leaves it displayed will have five extra chances to win!

There is *no* charge to participate in the 'New Model Army' Miniature Painting Contest. Participants may submit one entry from each wargame system they play. But--

GsG wouldn't mind selling some of the models hobbyists submit--certainly validating the entry's newness!--and so any entry purchased from Gunslinger Games, special order or offtheshelf, may be submitted *in addition to* the one per wargame system limit above. Additionally, such GsG purchases will accrue an additional entry in the random Participation Prize draw! Purchase receipt should be presented when the model is returned for display submission to validate it's eligibility for these bonuses.

January Texas Toy Soldier Storm of Magic Arcane Fulcrum Terrain Painting Contest

Participants in the North Texas Storm of Magic event series may this month model and paint a Storm of Magic objective for sponsoring retailer Texas Toy Soldier! Arcane Fulcrums are the key feature in Storm of Magic games--they provide power to control the swirling winds of magic, additional defense for the spellcasters in control of them...and the objectives which must be seized to win the game! And while these Arcane Fulcrums can be wildly more unique and imaginative than traditional buildings, forests, ruins and hills that comprise Warhammer Fantasy terrain--they are still *terrain*--and who better to judge terrain pieces than Allen at Texas Toy Soldier:

Armies On Parade at GW Grapevine Mills

Games Workshop Grapevine Mills invites North Texas hobbyists to display their finished armies Saturday, June 25, 2011 in their Armies On Parade Contest!

Similar to the event at this year's GamesDay, GWGM's Armies On Parade requires entrants to display their finished force on a 2'x2' base, scenicked to demonstrate their modeling/diorama skills and flatter their Citadel miniatures. Requirements are that the displayed army adhere to the standard Force Org chart, including minimum 1HQ and 2 TROOPs units, and that the display base absolutely not exceed the 2'x2' size restriction.

Paraded Armies must be set up on display for judging at GWGM before 2pm, Saturday, June 25. Good luck, generals!

All About Fun Hobbies in Euless announces two related events for Warhammer 40K:

1. A painting contest featuring Squads from any Games Workshop army;
2. A Tournament in which those newly painted Squads can take part.

For aeons, the area of Imperial space known as 'Mid-cities' has been a desolate wasteland for commanders in the 41st millenium. Warhammer 40K Painting Contest Rules:

1. Purchase (including by order if your choice is not in stock) one 25$ or more Games Workshop item. Special Rule: A total purchase of $60 or more of Games Workshop products will qualify you AND a friend for one entry each in the painting contest (note this would include the Assault on Black Reach starter boxed set, which includes two outstanding 500+ point starter armies--orks and space marines).
2. Any Games-Workshop purchase qualifies; however, the painting contest is specifically a showcase of Infantry Squads from any army in the Warhammer 40K universe. The Squad entered into the painting contest thus does not have to be the item purchased from the store (however, it must be painted by the person entering it into the competition).
3. All Squads entered in the painting contest must be Unit Type: Infantry and be codex-legal (ie, they must meet the minimum size, have only options listed for such a Squad in their rules, etc). Squads which are very similar (ie, Jump Infantry) may be approved by AAFH judges to be entered in the contest on a case-by-case basis.
4. All Squad entries must be handed in before 5pm, Sunday, June 27th, 2010 (earlier submissions are encouraged and will be prominently displayed in store).
5. All Squads will remain on display through the July 4th holiday weekend, while judging occurs; Squads and prizes can be picked up after.
6. There will be multiple prizes available including 'Best Squad' and 'Best Troops Squad;' further prizes may be offered depending on the number of entries.

Warhammer 40K Tournament Rules

1. Purchase (including by order if your choice is not in stock) one $25 or more Games Workshop item. Special Rule: A total purchase of $60 or more of Games Workshop products will qualify you AND a friend for one entry each in the tournament (note this would include the Assault on Black Reach starter boxed set, which includes two outstanding 500+ point starting armies--orks and space marines). If you enter the painting contest described above, your tournament entry is free!
2. If you use the Squad that you entered in the painting contest in your tournament army, it will receive a scoring bonus for the tournament.
3. If you use the item purchased from the store in your tournament army, it will
   *These bonuses are stackable (meaning, a person who purchases a Squad, paints it for the painting contest, and fields it in the tournament would benefit from both scoring bonuses for the tournament--as well as any prize they might win for the painting contest!).*

4. The tournament will feature armies of no more than 500 points, with one mandatory Troops choice the only Force Organization requirement. There will be at most three rounds for participants to take part in.
5. Tournament Awards will include Best General, for the winner of the most games, and Best All Around Player, which will be voted by contestants and include considerations like army composition, completeness, and sportsmanship. See AAFH judges for further details.
6. The tournament will be held Sunday July 4th, 2010, from 11AM-5PM, at All About Hobbies Euless. Games will start at 11:30 and run for roughly 1.5 hours each. The Awards ceremony is scheduled for 4:30PM.

'Mighty Beast' Modeling Contest at HobbytownUSA Dallas!

HobbytownUSA Dallas announces it's 'Mighty Beast' Modeling Contest! With the latest releases in their game systems all centering around the monsters of the Warhammer, 40K and Lord of the Rings universes--Tyranids, Beastmen, Fell Beasts, et al--Games Workshop has made it a great time to model the monstrous, and HTUD wants to see your best efforts!

Hobbyists may enter one 'beastly' model in each category (Warhammer Fantasy, Warhammer 40K and Lord of the Rings). The model must be primarily a Citadel miniature (conversions are encouraged from that base), must be purchased from HTUD, and must be assembled/converted/painted by the submitting participant.

It is up to that hobbyist how they define a 'mighty beast:' while this certainly includes Monstrous Creatures, Dragons, Giants, Minotaurs, Ogres (and Rat-Ogres), Hydras, Trolls, Stegadons, etc, it could as easily be something Daemonic, or a less-enormous but equally 'beastly' character model, such as a bray-shaman, ethereal or saurus-lord; you choose to submit what you consider *your* mightiest beast!

Submissions may begin immediately and are welcome for display in the glass cabinet in the games section at the front of the store, but *must* be brought to HTUD by end-of-business Sunday, March 21, 2010, where they will be displayed until the end of the month. Prizes will be awarded for 'Mighty Beast' in each category noted, as well as a 'Youngbeast' and a Best Overall 'Mightiest Beast!'

Rolling Thunder Vehicle Painting/Converting Contest

HobbytownUSA Dallas has begun a new contest designed to encourage modelers to stretch their vehicle model building, painting and especially converting skills: Rolling Thunder. Running now through December 20, 2008, new gaming specialist Jason will assist hobbyists with reaching a new level of modeling accomplishment in the Warhammer 40K tank of their choice. Jason says vehicle conversions are his favorite part of the hobby, and he looks forward to showing modelers how to use assets a full-line hobby shop like HobbytownUSA Dallas provides&mash;things like plasticard, detail parts, regular scale kits for bashing, etc—to turn their Games Workshop vehicle into something special. He also says thinking outside the box is encouraged for the Rolling Thunder event (up to and including interesting diorama bases)—so long as the result remains credibly a part of the 41st Millennium background of the hobby!

Models much be turned in by Thursday, December 18, 2008, where they will be formally judged—but will remain on display at HTUD through Saturday, December 20, 2008, so that every participant in the Rolling Thunder event can vote, as well! Prizes of Games Workshop product will be awarded, and participants of course get to keep their models for use in future 40K and Apocalypse events (so superheavies ARE legal!).

New Citadel Paint System: A Hand Flamer of Your Own!

Games Workshop will release the most comprehensive hobby painting system in their history with the new Citadel Paint System this summer. If you have a comfort level with the Primers, Protective Coats, Foundation Paint and Citadel Paint colour ranges already available, you will find those items still available; to them, GW will add a specially-designed and fully-compatible Citadel Washes range, to add depth and highlights to your models...and the tool which will facilitate all of it is the new Citadel Spray Brush, designed to worth with each of these paint lines with as much ease as possible--and to look like a Warhammer 40,000 Hand Flamer, in the process (that would be a 'close combat weapon' variant to those who aren't Rogue Trader or V2 grognards).

The Spray Brush *should not* be viewed as an airbrush, and will not be marketed as one. Although the technical principles are the same, airbrushes allow a vast range of painting functions and capabilities (at a considerably greater price and level of complication). The Citadel Spray Brush should, rather, be viewed as a 'base-coating brush,' an implement to deliver primer coats and basic-colour base coats to squads, regiments and other numerically large blocks of models, quickly and efficiently. To that end, mixing instructions for every kind of paint in the various Citadel ranges will be included with the brush...and as they are all acrylics, the mixing medium remains, simply, water. The nozzle on the Spray Brush will also have discreet settings that will allow modelers to 'set' the amount of paint coverage they want at pre-determined levels; and the Spray Brush can be connected directly to a compressor, if the hobbyist chooses (or has access to), but can just as easily be operated by easily-connectable cans of GW Propellant. Feel free to insert whatever smart comment about Games Workshop now literally selling hobbyists 'hot air' if you'd like...but grand hobby comedy aside, the idea behind the Spray Brush, the ranges of paints, and the compatibly-designed propellant cans is to provide access to a tool like this--which can be of tremendous benefit to a hobby for which painting large numbers of models is a critical component--to the vast majority of hobbyists who are not adept with, or even comfortable around, a more-sophisticated tool like a higher-line airbrush. It is an intermediate step from brush painting exclusively to mastering single- or double-action full-feature airbrushes.

And, of course, at the end of the day...it is also a 1:1 scale Hand Flamer of your very own. What hobbyist doesn't secretly want that?

March Lucky 13's Event: Mordant 13th High Command Group Complete!

Hobbyists met Sunday, March 23rd at HobbytownUSA Dallas to complete one of the most unique and satisfying Lucky 13s Apocalypse Campaign events yet--and the Mordant 13th Imperial Guard High Command Group was an enormous success! 19 of the 20 possible models were claimed by participants--and an impressive 16 of those 19 hobbyists delivered on their commitment, arriving on the day with a contribution to the retinue of Lucky 13s Colonel Jago Kallowen which excelled all expectations across the board!

Counting participants, interested hobbyists present, and HTUD staff, 23 ballots for 'Favorite Model' were collected; 11 of the 16 models received at least one vote, suggesting the broad quality across the submissions. Five models received more than one vote: Bob Westbrook's Mastervox Operator collected two to take Third Place, and three hobbyists tied for Runner-Up with three votes each--Vincent Headrick's Staff Officer, Bill Zalman's Standard Bearer, and Matt Mayer's High Commander Colonel Kallowen himself! The winning model, collecting six votes, was Ogryn Bodyguard Ognot Plasma-Face, created by Aaron Wheatcraft!

Thanks to Games Workshop and the staff of HobbytownUSA Dallas for contributing two 40K boxed sets and three randomly-awarded 40K model blisters as prize support--and thanks and congratulations to all 16 participants who earned their Lucky 13s Event Stamp by delivering on their commitments to make this event a tremendous success. Get by HTUD to see the High Command on their display base in the cabinet in the Games section...or come view their battlefield trial-by-fire against the Great Devourer in Saturday's second Lucky 13s campaign mega-battle in the HTUD Game Hall, 'Not On My Watch!'
