Sample Shadow War Kill Team Builds

For those interested in Shadow War: Armageddon unable to experience it due to GWs mismanagement of supply-and-demand (not your local retailer's fault), the standalone rule book--enhanced with all the Kill Team build options currently available on the web plus two exclusives--is available to preorder now and out May 6. Watch this space for a (hopefully) exciting development regarding organized play thereafter; in the meantime, to answer the questions regarding what a force composed for the game might look like, three sample SW:A Kill Teams built with the current rules and Kill Team kits follow.

Old school hobbyists will immediately recognize the mechanics and points-construction template of GWs well-regarded 90s Skirmish wargame Necromunda--only with real warriors, 41st Millennium Kill Teams, instead of scavenging Hive Gangers as your playable protagonists. That means a much broader scope to the game, and to personalizing your Skirmish Team according to your 40K army's background, characters, etc...and it means better access to much better kit.

There are size limits for every team--one Leader, two or three Specialists, max ten or twenty warriors depending on Troop quality (ten Marine Scouts, twenty Orks or Guard, fex)--and players start building with a max of 1000 points for warriors and gear. A tremendously cool option allows adding high-end Specialists to your chosen team for one-off missions, not at addtl points cost but rather in exchange for the 'promethium caches' you've earned in play, which represent your path to victory. Worth it, for example, if you are playing a high-quality IG-style Militarum Tempestus Kill Team, to trade a hard-won promethium cache for a Commissar to join their ranks? Possibly--if you have the model!

Points-built and equipped teams, however, are the core of the game. Building them will be half the fun--naming each model, keeping track of their adventures as they advance toward--or fall away from--ultimate victory. Everything will be about balancing effectiveness versus numbers; sometimes--for some type teams--it will be better to have as many members of a Kill Team as you can muster, even if they lack spectacular punch...other times, for other teams, the only way they will win consistently is insuring they have the right kit to do the job. You--as the tactician behind your proxy team leader--have to decide what works best for you.

Which decisions might yield variants like:

+++Space Marine Scout Kill Team+++
Six Scouts armed with Combat Blade in Scout Armour (990 points)
•Leader (250 points): Scout Sergeant (200) w/Bolt Pistol (25), Chainsword (25)
•Gunner (290 points): Scout Gunner (110), w/Heavy Bolter (180)
•Scout (135 points): Scout (100), Boltgun (35)
•Scout (125 points): Scout (100), Bolt Pistol (25)
•Novitiate (95 points): Novitiate Scout (75), Shotgun (20)
•Novitiate (95 points): Noviate Scout (75), Shotgun (20)
One could drop the second Novitiate to beef up kit; that's the kind of individual choice Necromunda/SW:A encourages

+++Ork Kill Team+++
Ten Orks armed with a Shank in Hide Armour (1000 points)
•Boss Nob (235 points): Boss Nob (160), Eavy Armour (25), Slugga (10), Big Choppa (15), Stikkbombs (25)
•Spanner Boy (215 points): Spanner Boy (70), Big Shoota (130), Red-dot Laser Sight (15)
•Boy (100 points): Boy (60), Slugga (10), Buzz Choppa (15), Stikkbombs (15)
•Boy (80 points): Boy (60), Slugga (10), Choppa (10)
•Boy (80 points): Boy (60), Slugga (10), Choppa (10)
•Boy (80 points): Boy (60), Slugga (10), Choppa (10)
•Yoof (50 points): Yoof (30), Slugga (10), Choppa (10)
•Yoof (50 points): Yoof (30), Slugga (10), Choppa (10)
•Yoof (55 points): Yoof (30), Shoota (25)
•Yoof (55 points): Yoof (30), Shoota (25)
A really solid Starter Team, this: loaded Boss, well-kitted Heavy, a lieutenant with slightly upgraded kit in case you have to split the team (or--horrors--you lose the Boss), and good numbers. Love to have a power klaw, love to have a rokkit launcha, but the big choppa and big shoota instead give you an extra boy...and numbers are, in Skirmish as in 40K, usually a green walking fungus's best friend.

+++Astra Militarum Kill Team+++
Nine Imperial Guard armed with Combat Blade in Flak Armour (1000 points)
•Veteran Sergeant (215 points): Vet Sgt (120), Carapace Armour (20 points), Bolt Pistol (25), Power Sword (50)
•Operative (170 points): Operative (70), Plasma Gun (80), Carapace Armour (20)
•Operative (130 points): Operative (70), Flamer (40), Carapace Armour (20)
•Veteran Guardsman (90 points): Vet Guardsman (60), Laspistol (15), Sword (15)
•Veteran Guardsman (85 points): Vet Guardsman (60), Lasgun (25)
•Veteran Guardsman (85 points): Vet Guardsman (60), Lasgun (25)
•Veteran Guardsman (85 points): Vet Guardsman (60), Lasgun (25)
•Guardsman (70 points): Guardsman (50), Shotgun (20)
•Guardsman (70 points): Guardsman (50), Shotgun (20)
Adding the second Operative to this build reduces the numbers to nine; you could drop him and add two Guardsmen instead, successful IG Kill Teams *have* to win with smart, effective shooting, and massed lasguns is usually the formula, but I envision the Vets in this build acting with the Plasma Operative as a traditional Astra Militarum Skirmish firebase while the two basic Guard protect the Flamer Op (who has to advance), probably with the Sgt and perhaps his second (who is likely better leading the fire team). An alternative would be to up-Carapace all Vets to Tempestus and try quality over quantity, a build I am itching to try, given those outstanding models...but 'quality over quantity' builds always seemed to backfire on me in Necromunda.

Anyway...these are some samples, and variant options, to at least illustrate what you would have to invest in, to get involved in SW:A. Intrigued enough to want to know what all that abbreviated data means--order the standalone rulebook ASAP. Not an overwhelming investment in models, is it? Even if you are eager to add miniatures to allow fielding cool specialists (a Deathwatch Veteran Space Marine or even a Terminator to your Scouts, an Enginseer to your IG, a Mad Dok or Flash Git with gigantic snazz gun for your Boyz), Skirmish 40K promises weeks, perhaps months, of fun using little more than a squads-worth equivalent of models--all of which you can lavish time on with your best conversions and paint jobs, your most elaborate background and imaginative detail.

Recommended. For ideas on what to do with said Kill Team in the near future--watch this space.

Holiday Parade of Space Marines

In celebration of a the holiday season, a new codex and a raft of new models for the iconic Warhammer 40K army, Gunslinger Games announces 'The Holiday Parade of Space Marines!'

Interested hobbyists are encouraged to participate by submitting a Tactical Space Marine model from their chosen chapter, whether of GW creation--Ultramarine, Black Templar, Blood or Dark Angel, Space Wolf, etc--or the player's own--a 'DIY' or 'Do it Yourself' chapter. Gunslinger will devote space in their display case to these power-armored representatives of the thousand chapters of the Adeptus Astartes through November and December, with opportunity for hobbyists to vote for their favorite. Anyone may submit one of their Space Marines, and anyone may vote in the Parade--no purchase necessary!

Chapters are more than just the fighting strength of their individual warriors, however--and to reflect that, additional contests will run concurrently for Space Marine Leaders and Space Marine Vehicles. Hobbyists interested in submitting models for these two supplemental contests can do so by *making the relevant purchase* from sponsor Gunslinger Games (with plenty of time to make a special order, currently the best way to obtain GW product through Gunslinger--and at a discount off list price), completing and submitting their model of choice for display in Gunslinger's display case through the end of the year.

Further--although the Parade of Space Marines tactical entries are restricted to one per hobbyist, players may submit as many Leaders or Vehicles as they purchase from Gunslinger and complete!

In addition to prizes for Favorite Space Marine on Parade, Favorite Space Marine Leader and Favorite Space Marine Vehicle, all of which will be determined by popular vote, there will be an adjudicated prize for Best Space Marine--which will be the single best painted and converted space marine in power armour, from either the Space Marine or Leader category--and Best Chapter Representative--which can be *any* model from any of the three categories, including vehicles, which through excellence of execution best embodies the ideals of the Adeptus Astartes and it's individual chapter.

Entrants *must* register when they submit their tactical space marine model to the Parade, listing their name and the name of their represented chapter. They do this simply by posting that information to the Adeptus North Texas emailing list.

Any model which would constitute a legal 'Tactical Space Marine' or the equivalent from a related codex may be submitted, including Sergeants, special and heavy weapon carriers, but remember a stated goal of the contest--and one of the adjudicated prizes--will reward the iconic model in this category. Hobbyists who make a purchase of a Leader (defined for the purposes of this contest as any Space Marine Commander, Captain, Librarian, Chaplain, Techmarine, Apothecary, Standard Bearer or Squad Sergeant model or the equivalent from a related Space Marine chapter, such as an Iron Priest or Rune Priest, or a chapter-specific Leader such as the Black Templars' Emperors Champion) or a Vehicle (defined for this contest as any codex entry having an AV--including walkers and flyers--*or* being a Bike) will register at the Adeptus North Texas emailing list upon making the purchase, identifying themselves and what they bought, which will then be confirmed on the list when they return to submit it for display. Leader models in Terminator Armour *may* be purchased and submitted.

Entries may be submitted to Gunslinger Games for display immediately. Voting will not begin until after Christmas...but the Parade will only look good if there are models to see, so there is incentive to submitting models early: any model on display in Gunslinger's case *and* registered on the Adeptus email list during November (before 12:01am Central December 1) accrues one bonus vote for Favorite model in it's category, and any model on display in Gunslinger's case *and* registered on the Adeptus email list in December before Christmas Day (12:01am December 25) accrues one bonus vote for Favorite model in it's category. Yes, that is potentially two votes a model can earn before balloting begins! Winners will be announced, prizes awarded (and models may be collected) after January 1, 2014, following conclusion of balloting at close of business for host Gunslinger Games for 2013.

Any questions about the eligibility of a given model not clear in these contest instructions may be clarified through inquiry on the Adeptus North Texas email list at http://www.AdeptusNorthTexas.com , as Adeptus is acting as event administration for the Parade.

They are the Emperor's Chosen. They are Humanity's Champions. They are the Space Marines. They know no fear--and they will be on Parade at Gunslinger Games through the 2013 Holiday season. Muster your Chapter's colours, and represent!

Fall 2013 40K Escalation League

Fall 2013 40K Escalation League play will begin in September and run through December 14th. Games begin at 500 Point Adepticon Combat Patrols, then become standard Force Org and increase by 250 points every two weeks up to 2000 points. December 14th there will be a Mega Battle held and prizes awarded, provided by organizers dfw40k.com, for the Top Three Generals, the Best Painted Army and the MVPs from each side of the Mega Battle, as voted on by the league participants.

There will also be random drawings at each point level for players who report for small prizes, including dfw40k.com tape measures.

Rules and Info (these are the exact same rules as originally created for the Summer 2013 League):

SCORING:
Each participant will play 2 games at the specified point level against 2 different opponents. A win is worth 4 points, a draw 3 points, and a loss 2 points. Subtract one point if your army is not fully painted (painted bases optional) for that battle. Games missed at one point level can be made it up at the next level (so if you aren't able to find 2 games at 750pts you can play 4 at 1000pts for example).

RULES:
Any Games Workshop published army lists are allowed, including Forgeworld and White Dwarf lists and units that have been updated to 6th edition (except super-heavies and other Apocalypse scale units). If in doubt please contact league organizer Matt Plummer.

All models should be WYSIWYG, especially conversions, but do not have to be all ForgeWorld or Citadel miniatures.

Each player should bring a copy of their army list to the game for their opponent.

All results should be reported to the league organizer and include point level, the names of both players, the results (who won/who lost), the mission and deployment type, and your army list (there should be a report for
each battle from both players).

COMBAT PATROL RULES (Modified from Adepticon):
• Armies will consist of 500 points or less, and must conform to the following Force Organization restrictions:
⇒ 0 - 1 HQ
⇒ 1 - 3 Troops (you MUST bring at least one Troop choice)
⇒ 0 - 1 Elite
⇒ 0 - 1 Fast Attack
⇒ 0 - 1 Heavy Support
⇒ 0 - 1 ‘Swing Slot’ (this maybe be used to field one additional Troops, Elite, Fast Attack OR Heavy Support choice)

• Armies are not required to take mandatory unit choices. All other unit restrictions (i.e. 0 - 1) apply.

• You may spend remaining points on units from anywhere in the Codex.

• No Special/Unique/Named Characters are allowed.

• As only one HQ is available, Allies are not allowed.

• With the exception of Troops and models with the Swarm USR, No model can have more than 2 Wounds.

• Aside from Troops choices and dedicated Transports, only vehicles with a maximum of 11 in any armor facing may be taken. Dedicated transports and troops may have a maximum armor facing of 12. Vehicle Squadrons and Artillery units are permitted provided every unit within the unit individually would be permitted. Vehicle upgrades that increase an armor facing may only raise the armor value to a maximum of 12 (this includes Necron Quantum Shielding).

•Rules Modification (Psykers): All Psykers may use ONE Warp Charge per game turn. Psykers may exchange powers as normal.

•Rules Modification (Flyers/Reserves): At the start of your Turn One, and each turn thereafter, you must roll a D6 for each Flyer being held in reserve. If the roll is 3 or more, the Flyer and all embarked units arrive at the start of the following turn. Flyers and all embarked units will automatically arrive at the start of Turn Five. Example: On Turn Three, a Necron Night Scythe with troops makes a successful Reserve Roll - they will arrive on Turn Four. There is no need to make a Reserve Roll at the beginning of Turn Four, as all remaining Flyers and embarked units will automatically show up at the beginning of Turn Five.

Good luck, aspiring commanders!

Warhammer 40,000 North Texas Summer Escalation League

Players across the Metroplex are invited to build a 6th edition Warhammer 40,000 army via the North Texas Summer Escalation League!

League Organizer Edward McDaniel invites interested hobbyists to join by emailing emcdaniel@gmail.com with their name, army (plus allies) and preferred play location. Participants will be tracked via the League dedicated Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/groups/322315597863267/ with details also maintained through Adeptus North Texas and it's emailing list http://www.adeptusnorthtexas.com.

Play will begin at 500 points using Combat Patrol Force Org May 18 through the end of May. June 1 armies increase to 750 points and Standard Force Org. June 15 the army points increase to 1000; June 29 to 1250 points; July 13 to 1500 points; July 27 to 1750 points; and August 10 thru the end of the summer 2000 points.

A climactic 2000 point Tournament will conclude the Escalation League the weekend of August 24 & 25, which will include voting by participants for such things as Best Painted Army and Best Model (converted and painted). Details regarding the culminating event will be posted separately once the League is underway.

Each player will attempt to record 2 battles at each army points level. The games must be against 2 different opponents to count. A win is worth 4 League points, a Draw 3, and a Loss 2. Play with unfinished/unpainted armies IS legal (opponent willing), but playing with an unfinished army subtracts -1 League point from that player's total. Players who do not get both games in at a League point level can make those games up in subsequent weeks (to accommodate vacations and other unforeseen absences without discouraging players from continuing to participate).

ANY published Games Workshop army list is allowed, including Forge World book variants and White Dwarf article lists, so long as the list and it's units are updated to 6th edition (Apocalypse/super-heavy units are not legal except for League-related Apocalypse special events).

Games may be played at any location--a participating North Texas retailer or your own or a buddy's home--but results must be reported to League Organizer McDaniel to be verified and count.

Battle Reports to the League Organizer should include:
-Both Player Names
-Result
-Point Level
-Mission and Deployment
-Army Lists used

All models must be WYSIWYG, especially in the case of conversions, but are not restricted by manufacturer beyond that.

Each player should have their published army list source readily available, a printed, accurate and legible army list (and preferably one for their opponent).

Rulebook page 118 should be referred to for Missions, Terrain and Deployment.

The opening Combat Patrol Rules will not be the standard Adeptus North Texas variant but rather a modified Adepticon version; contact League Organizer for details.

The League will utilize Adeptus North Texas, it's emailing list, and it's Facebook page to develop and recognize other aspects of the Hobby, like the creation of interesting continuing characters to lead players' armies and the composing of fiction to add depth and colour to the stories played out in League games; and there will be several events throughout the summer of extra added value to League participants.

Best of all--playing in the League costs nothing beyond enthusiasm and good sportsmanship!

Email League Organizer McDaniel today, and muster your forces--a new army awaits you by the end of summer 2013, through participation in the Warhammer 40,000 North Texas Summer Eacalation League!

Texas Toy Soldier Warhammer 40,000 Summer League

Summer 2013 is shaping up to be an excellent opportunity to build a Warhammer 40,000 army in North Texas, with multiple escalation leagues announced!

First to begin will be Texas Toy Soldier's Summer 40K League. This league begins on Tuesday, May 7 and runs through Tuesday, July 23, climaxing in an End-of-League Tournament Saturday, July 27.
This Escalation League starts at 750 points and moves to 1500 points.

Dedicated league night in-store is Tuesday, but league games can be played any time TTS is open and tables are uncommitted to other scheduled events.

TTS league rules and goals are straightforward:

1 – Have Fun. TTS is more interested in fostering fun than anything else: sure, play to win, but be a sportsman about it.

2 – Build an army. The format of the league is setup to allow players to start with smaller armies and build them up by the end of the league.

3 – Meet New Players. The league scoring system encourages playing against an opponent for the first time.

4– Score Points. Players score for playing games as well as winning them, and for playing opponents for the first time. Accrued points determine each player's overall rank in the league, but TTS reminds participants do not be too concerned about how many points you have scored, the main purpose of the league is to get gamers together to play.

How to Join: Sign up at Texas Toy Soldier. The entry fee is $10. You will need to provide your name, email address and the army (or armies, see following) you will build and play in the league.

Prizes: Every player who participates in the League Finals will win a prize.

The TTS Escalation League starts at 750 points May 7; army size increases to 1000 points May 28; army size increases to 1250 points June 18; army size increases to 1500 points July 9. The last day for League play will be July 23, with the End-of-League Tournament Final Saturday, July 27.

Army selection: Players may build and play as many different armies during the span of league play as they desire, with each additional army codex registered costing an additional $10. Players may register more than one army initially, or may add armies at any time. Regardless of how many armies are registered, points are accumulated as a player. Every game you play will count towards your point total, no matter what army you are playing.

WYSIWYG: This stands for "What You See Is What You Get" and it means that the Missile Launcher carried by your Space Marine is not a Lascannon; players must make a reasonable effort to point troops as they are actually modeled.

Missions: Players may use the standard missions in the rulebook or choose from missions provided at the store, which will be previews of the tournament scenarios.

Scoring League Points and making it to the finals: Games must be played at Texas Toy Soldier. You can play as many games as you want, and play the same opponent as many times as you both want. Points are earned for Games Played, Games Won, and new opponents faced at the following rate:
750 points: 1 point
1000 points: 2 points
1250 points: 3 points
1500 points: 4 points
Winning: +2 points
Playing someone for the first time: +4 points

The players with the most League Points on the final Tuesday of play (probably 12 or 16 players, depending on how many are in the league) will be invited to play in the End-of-League Tournament on Saturday, July 27. The winner of the Tournament will be declared League Champion.

Good luck, Commanders!

Apocalypse: The Big Game III

The largest Warhammer 40,000 game in the world returns Saturday, March 16, 2013, with the primary battlefield for The Big Game III moving to Games Workshop's Memphis Battle Bunker--and an additional front of the massive conflict occurring in North Texas, at Gunslinger Games!

Hosted by http://www.apocalypse40K.com The Big Game III will feature a custom scenario linking Apocalypse battles across the United States and six countries!

Interested players in the DFW area are encouraged to arrive at Gunslinger Games at 9:30am; set-up and first turn will be completed before a lunch break, then play will accelerate to the grand climax. There is *no charge* to participate in The Big Game III, and no restriction on what players may bring beyond that they be fully-painted, authorized/licensed Apocalypse miniatures (Citadel, ForgeWorld, Epicast/Armorcast, etc) and that all participants have a printed copy in hand of the relevant codex/datasheet/sourcebook for their used-forces. Players are encouraged to bring all their goodies, though forces may be sized at time of play to achieve relative balance for the custom scenario.

Join thousands of hobbyists and millions of points of forty-first millennium armies at Gunslinger Games Saturday, March 16, 2013 for Apocalypse: The Big Game III!

Apocalypse 40K February 23 at Gunslinger Games

Gunslinger Games will host a Warhammer 40,000 6th Edition Apocalypse Multiplayer Megabattle Saturday, February 23, 2013, beginning at noon, as the forces of the Imperium rally against the Ruinous Powers to gain control of an Imperial research outpost that has gone inexplicably silent in the 'Race For Dark Arcangel!'

Anyone interested in participating may bring a force of up to 750 points from a single codex, with at least one Troops choice and some model clearly recognizable as a leader (either an HQ choice, a squad upgrade such as a Sergeant, or a distinguishable model) mandatory--anything else they wish to include is their preference! Players must have a legible, accurate army list and the source codex in hand.

Players wishing to play an Apocalypse Datasheet--either a superheavy vehicle, gargantuan creature or Apocalypse formation--may substitute that vehicle, creature or formation instead of the 750 point base force described above, so long as the model is painted and the player has the source Datasheet in hand (either from White Dwarf, an Apocalypse published volume or printed from the GW website). IF THE DATASHEET HAS NOT YET BEEN MODIFIED FOR 6th EDITION IT WILL NOT BE ALLOWED IF THE PLAYER HAS NOT CLEARED IT--AND HAD IT UPDATED IF NECESSARY--BY THE EVENT MODERATOR IN ADVANCE. This can be done via the Adeptus North Texas emailing list, accessible from http://www.adeptusnorthtexas.com . This may mean the player has slightly fewer or considerably more points available to them than the base force--a single Reaver Titan, for example--but it would not be an Apocalypse game without such monarchs of the battlefield! Trust from past experience there will be important roles the standard objective-seizing squad will still have to play on the day.

If Players wish to bring a Core 750 point force such as described above AND a Datasheet, or two Datasheets (such as two superheavy vehicles), they can--but to do so, they must make a minimum $20 purchase from host Gunslinger Games, and notify the Moderator via the Adeptus North Texas emailing list they have so qualified. Anyone making such a purchase from GsG of an Imperial Bunker terrain piece or a Skyshield Landing Pad terrain piece and who gets it assembled, painted and brought to GsG for use in the scenario on the day of battle will accrue a custom Apocalypse Stratagem battlefield benefit, useable by their force on the day!

The thematic forces in the battle will be Imperial--Space Marines [including Dark Angels, Blood Angels, Space Wolves and Black Templars], Grey Knights [including Inquisition], Imperial Guard and Sisters of Battle--against Chaos--Chaos Daemons, Chaos Space Marines and Traitor Imperial Guard. Eldar, Tau, Dark Eldar, Orks, Tyranids and Necrons may all either be drawn to the conflict or already have a presence on the planet and be awakened by it; they will fight whichever side they are attacked by/view as the enemy (ie, will be used to balance sides) but will not be able to determine victory or defeat for the scenario--if any forces of these races, regardless of which side they battle for, hold the objective(s) at race's end, the result is a Draw (arguably a victory for them).

Apocalypse Stratagems will be used but will be assigned to each side to use collectively in the pre-battle conference.

Generals, rally your commands; Arcangel has fallen silent, fell powers gather about it, and a terrible secret lies waiting for those with the power to seize it. Take to the 41st millennium battlefield Saturday, February 23, 2013 at noon at Gunslinger Games and attempt to win the 'Race for Dark Arcangel!'

Intro To Hobby Tourney Sat, Jan 12 at Gunslinger Games

Gunslinger Games will let North Texas hobbyists put their 40K Christmas presents on the game table Saturday, January 12, 2013, by hosting a Warhammer 40,000 6th Edition Combat Patrol Tournament!

Interested players of all experience levels are welcome--in fact the Combat Patrol format is particularly effective for players new to the hobby:

•Armies of 400 Points or less.

•One core TROOPS choice mandatory.

•One HQ choice optional (patrol leader may be a squad upgrade such as a veteran sergeant).

•No Characters, Monsters or other unit types with more than 2 Wounds.

•No Vehicles with combined Armour Value greater than 34 (front/side/rear AV added, ie a Dreadnought with 12/12/10 is patrol-legal).

•Although there will be scoring of and prizes for Painting, participation requires only that used models be assembled, based and equipped as they will be played (ie with proper weapons and upgrades).

•Play consists of three 50 minute games in succession--by tournament's end, hobbyists will have a working familiarity with the game and with the core of their army, upon which they can readily build.

•Play begins after lunch and is finished before dinner!

To get those holiday gifts into action, players may register one of two ways:

•Make a purchase at host Gunslinger Games of $10 or greater, sign up in-store, then confirm your registration and what army you will play at Outrider@AdeptusNorthTexas.com (or on the Adeptus email list).

•Buy a participation entry from host Gunslinger Games for $10, sign up in-store, then confirm your registration and what army you will play at Outrider@AdeptusNorthTexas.com (or on the Adeptus email list).

The Combat Patrol tournament will run from Noon till 4:30pm.

Assemble you core patrol, be it an assemblage of grizzled veteran models, a shiny new addition to a familiar force, or an all-new, never-tried first excursion into the hobby, and let slip the dogs of forty-first millennium war, Saturday, January 12, at Gunslinger Games.

Lone Star Comics Arlington 40K Event

Lone Star Comics will hold a one-day, ten-player campaign event Saturday, January 12, 2013, at their Arlington location, 1215 S. Cooper.

The "Gathering of Heroes" will be a two-sided campaign game, with a maximum of five players per side, ten players total. Entry fee for the event is $35. This entry fee covers not only participation but also prizes (including door prizes), gift grabbags and a lunch.

The moderators stress this is NOT a tournament, but a story-driven campaign which will be resolved in a single day of play. The following army restrictions will be in effect:

  • 1500 point maximum for each player.
  • At least one named character in each army.
  • NO Fortifications, due to constraints of the Campaign which will be made evident in the course of play.

Players will be expected to provide an accurate, legible army list legal to the above specifications, their source codex/army list and other rulebooks, dice, tape measure and any other items needed for their army. They will receive the campaign story packet on the day of the event.

Players with any questions or who are interested in signing up for the event should contact moderator Jon Ansley directly at jonansley@lonestarcomics.com.

Good luck to those 40K commanders who opt to report for the "Gathering of Heroes!"

Result: 40K Doubles Tournament at Gunslinger Games

Gunslinger Games was full to overflow for Saturday, October 21st's Warhammer 40,000 Sixth Edition Doubles Team Tournament, with these hobbyists achieving notable outcomes:

• Best Overall Team: Billy and Tommy Pistole (Orks/Traitor Imperial Guard)

• Best Sportsmen Team: Barret Allen and Chuck Williams (Necrons/Exorcist Space Marines)

• Best Painted: Michael Sanford (Grey Knights)

Michael Sanford and teammate Will Davis also went undefeated to be named Best Generals (Grey Knights/Salamander Space Marines); Eric and Alexz Smelley (Dark Eldar/Space Wolves) had Best Army List; those two teams tied to finish Third Overall, with Josh Sherman and Brady Allen (Jade Legion Space Marines/Tyranids) finishing Runner-up Overall Team.

Level of play was very high, reflected in close games through all three rounds--and above average Sportsmanship scores for virtually the entire roster of teams. That's well-known as a point of emphasis for events I moderate--play which results in players having fun keeps players in the hobby--but it created a real logjam at the top for the Best Sportsmen prize: when bonus points for being named Favorite Opponent were added to each round's score, three teams were tied for high score, with three more only a single point behind. Winning team Barret and Chuck were the only players to receive maximum scores for each round, which broke the tie, but kudos to Chris LaJudice/John Saxin (Chaos Space Marines/Tyranids) and Josh Sherman/Brady Allen (tied for Best Sportsmen) and John Laird/Ben Chukmuwa (Space Marines/Blood Angels), the Smelleys and the Pistoles for finishing a single point off.

Kudos to the community, as well: three teams cancelled at the last moment (one late Friday, two Saturday morning), yet enough players showed up in hope of playing that the event was still full, with late arrivals staying to play each other and even demo games for interested passersby/potential new hobbyists. It was a fun day of 40K.

Finally, thanks to Gunslinger Games for hosting and providing over $120 of prize support; look for Games Workshop to continue to increase it's presence at the store, based on the success of these events. More of which to come--watch adeptusnorthtexas.com for details!

V6 Combat Patrol Tourney at Gunslinger Games

Gunslinger Games hopes to recreate July's success by welcoming hobbyists to another opportunity to explore Warhammer 40,000 Sixth Edition Saturday, September 8 through a Combat Patrol Tournament--this one with an army composition upgrade offer!

As before, players may sign up in advance at Gunslinger Games by either paying a $5 entry fee or making a $10 or more purchase; players may sign up on the day of the event for a $10 entry fee or by making a $10 or more purchase if slots remain. The event will run from Noon until approximately 4:30pm.

Combat Patrol forces are traditionally 400-point-maximum, no Allies armies chosen from one in-print 40K Codex which *must* have at least one core Troops choice; the remainder of the Force Org can be chosen from a maximum of one HQ choice (maximum 2 Wounds, no 2+ Saves), vehicles with a maximum AV of 34 (adding Front, Rear and Side Armour [once]), and additional units of choice which do not exceed 2 Wounds and do not include 2+ Saves. A Combat Patrol Commander figure must be identified; this will be the HQ choice if taken, or a unit leader or other readily identifiable model, otherwise.

Because codices--and in fact the core rules themselves--have undergone considerable revision since Combat Patrol tournament limitations were originally conceived, players may, for this event, alter the above-described traditional force composition in the following way: each player may select one character or unit for their Combat Patrol which exceeds Combat Patrol limitations--but the character or unit will operate for the duration of the tourney under said limitations. In other words--players may select, and pay the full codex points cost for, one character or unit which has more than 2 Wounds, but that character or all models in that unit will play at the event with a maximum of 2 Wounds (simulating pre-existing injury or debilitation); players may select, and pay the full codex points cost for, one character or unit which has a 2+ Save, but that character or all models in that unit will play at the event with a maximum of a 3+ Save (simulating armour breakdown or wear-and-tear); and players may select, and pay the full codex points cost for, a single vehicle which exceeds the maximum AV of 34, but that vehicle will play at the event with AV values of 12/12/10 or 13/11/10, whichever most closely approximates its actual AV (simulating sustained damage to the vehicle prior to battle). Most players will, of course, not opt to play these more expensive characters, units and vehicles at less than their peak efficiency, but for those whose particular codex dramatically limits their options--or who are willing to suffer the on-table penalty in order to field an army more consistent with their theme and vision--this twist offers considerable flexibility. Further exceptions to the standard Combat Patrol force composition limitations are possible but must be approved by the Event Moderator via the Adeptus North Texas emailing list in advance (the only likely candidate which occurs at time of this writing would be a player wishing to take an HQ choice in Tactical Dreadnought Armour with the special ability to then turn a squad of Terminators into a Troops choice, and thus field a Patrol of all Terminators, and something like this, being obviously thematic and cool, would likely receive a waiver allowing the second exceptional unit--but they would all be operating for the tourney with 3+ effective Saves, so said player is really going to have to like playing his Terminators...).

Chosen HQ choices will be able to roll on the Warlord chart for this event if ordinarily eligible to do so. Fortifications may be chosen for this event as part of the player's 400 point force, as per V6 rules. The Fortifications are not subject to the AV limit.

Participating players must have at least two printed, legible and accurate Army Lists with their names on the List, one of which will be turned in to the moderator for verification, table and opponent assignment before the first round begins. This was an area of considerable non-compliance in July; please take the time to complete this participation requirement for the September 8 event.

Models must be primarily Citadel miniatures, fully assembled and properly, legally based; as an introduction to V6-oriented event, forces need not be fully painted *but* there will be a prize for the Best Painted Patrol and every effort will be made for players with painted armies to play opponents with painted armies.

The event will consist of three rounds, following this schedule:

12pm: Check-In/Army List Turn-In/Table Assignment
12:15-1:15pm: Round One
1:30-2:30pm: Round Two
2:45-3:45pm: Round Three
4-4:30pm: Announcement of Winners
Prizes will be awarded as soon as final scores are tallied.

Prizes will be awarded in the form of Gunslinger Games gift cards and entry fee waivers for future events!

Games between any players who are also participating in the North Texas Norh'Tek Nebula V6 Campaign will count extra, and have special campaign conditions in play.

Come spend an afternoon getting to know Warhammer 40,000 Sixth Edition Saturday, September 8 from Noon to 4:30pm, at Gunslinger Games' next V6 40K Combat Patrol Tourney! Commanders, choose your Patrols well!

Secret Door Apocalypse Charity Event

The Secret Door, a new North Texas GW retailer in the Midway Mall in Sherman, announces a Warhammer 40,000 Apocalypse event Saturday, July 14, at the Bryan County Community Center, Bryan County Fairgrounds, Oklahoma, to benefit 'Raising for Rylie'--a charitable organization funding a liver transplant for a six-year-old girl in need.

A donation of at least $10 per player (with all proceeds going to the charity) earns participants the opportunity to bring a force of 1000 - 4000 points. Every 40K race is welcome, and while painted models are preferred the charitable nature of the event means all are welcome. Gameplay will begin at 10am.

The event will also include a Raffle, an Auction, starter kit building demos, a model display, other fundraising activities--and food!

Contact Andrew at The Secret Door with questions or for additional details, and rise to Rylie's defense July 14!

War for the Norh'tek Nebula Campaign

The release of 6th Edition Warhammer 40,000 is upon us...and to renew enthusiasm for the Hobby and its storytelling and model-building--as well as gameplay--aspects, Adeptus North Texas and participating Metroplex retailers will follow it up with an expansive new ongoing campaign!

War for the Norh'tek Nebula will see each participating store representing a planetary system; as the Nebula region of space roughly corresponds to North Texas, so each store system will be roughly contiguous to their location across the Metroplex. The campaign theme will be announced following the release of V6 details, but all 40K combatant armies will be able to participate!

Campaign battles will be fought three ways 1) in participating stores; 2) at special events (tournaments, Nebula games days/Apocalypse megabattles) in participating stores; and 3) at home/clubs/anywhere else. There will be incentives to fight games actually in stores--for example, retailers who provide in-store playing space will represent a planetary system within the Nebula with a major planet, and all games played in-store will count toward control of that major body, while games fought elsewhere but committed to that system will count toward control of moons/minor planetary bodies therein--but *any* game played (and reported) by participating hobbyists can affect the ongoing campaign. This will allow participating stores which retail GW product but lack in-store playspace to still participate (though their planetary system may be a shattered planet or asteroid belt or somesuch similar lacking a major planet--since they cannot host the in-store game portion--if they can rearrange their store for the occasional special event they might get a special 'high priority' asset discovered to fight over, for example).

The campaign is being announced well in advance of product release to allow hobbyists to take advantage of an additional campaign feature: players will be able to 'declare' a home planetary system by purchasing any version of the upcoming V6 rulebook or the eventual V6 starter boxed set from a chosen retailer--and any campaign games players win for their home system accrue extra benefits toward control of that store's system (representing investment of and/or control of high value assets, etc, such as any martial force might commit to maintain 'home base'). Hobbyists should thus consider in advance where they play most frequently, encourage that retailer to join the campaign, and then make their rulebook/starter set purchases there!

All administering of the campaign will be done on Adeptus North Texas so interested hobbyists will need to be subscribed to the site's emailing list to report results and follow campaign events. Hobbyist participation will be rewarded with in-campaign benefits, as well: name your army's commander, write up your chapter's background, share a campaign battle report, use your graphic arts skills to help compose the Norh'Tek Nebula map (or your store's individual planetary system)--and post it to Adeptus for the community to share!--and you may see it reflected in ongoing campaign events.

It is a time of change; it is a time of struggle. It is the forty-first millennium--and regardless of edition changes, one fact remains constant: in the grim darkness of the far future...there is only war!
